Public Meeting Notice

Draft Tisbury Great Pond and Black Point Pond Estuarine System Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) For Total Nitrogen (CN-398.0)
Towns of West Tisbury and Chilmark

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announces the availability, for public comment, of the Draft Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for Total Nitrogen in the Tisbury Great Pond and Black Point Pond Estuarine System in the Towns of West Tisbury and Chilmark, Massachusetts. The system is impaired by nutrients, specifically nitrogen. This Draft TMDL Report is required by the EPA Federal Clean Water Act section 303d and is directed at control of excessive nitrogen which impair uses in the system, such as aquatic life. A TMDL is essentially a “pollution budget” designed to restore the health of an impaired waterbody.

Copies of this Draft TMDL Report for Total Nitrogen, and a further explanation of the TMDL Program and the Massachusetts Estuaries Project are available on MassDEP’s website at:

http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/massdep/water/watersheds/total-maximum-daily-loads-tmdls.html#13

The Massachusetts Estuaries Project Final Technical Reports for Tisbury Great Pond and Black Point Pond Estuarine System on which the TMDLs were based, are available at:

http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/massdep/water/watersheds/the-massachusetts-estuaries-project-and-reports.html

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 1:00 pm in the meeting room at the West Tisbury Public Library, 1042 State Road, West Tisbury, MA to discuss and respond to any public comments on the report. Based on the comments received, the Draft Report will be rewritten and the final version sent to the USEPA for approval. All comments should refer to the report number (CN 398.0) and must be received by 5:00 pm on February 22, 2018. Comments should be sent to:

Lambert's Cove Beach

The Conservation Commission and the Parks and Recreation collaborated on a dune restoration project on the path to Lambert's Cove Beach over the winter of 2012. The snow fencing was installed to help capture wind-blown sand in order to build the dune up. American Beach Grass was planted this spring to help stabilize the dune.
